The list gets longer every week, Montpellier became Clermont’s 73rd victim of successive home wins, it’s over 4 years since their last home defeat, an incredible feat which will no doubt last for many years.
This match was being called as just maybe one of the best of this season’s, 1st against 2nd in this season’s TOP 14, everything was there for a great afternoons rugby, a full house, 2 teams who play fast running rugby, absolutely everything ready for magic moments and what did we get, a comedy of errors by the Man in the Middle, Mon Minery 3 yellow cards for Montpellier and one red for Clermont, and that was in the first 30 mins.
The Clermont supporters are probably the best in the land, not surprising when you see the class of the team that they dearly love, they are always behind their boys whatever happens, and the stadium is more often than not bursting at the seams, but to see 18,000 supporters’ jeering and booing every decision the ref makes for the last 50 mins. was something never witnessed by many, but it was deserved.
The match itself provided 7 tries 5 for Clermont and 2 for Montpellier and there were some good moments, both teams were attacking in their usual styles but Clermont always looked more dangerous with ball in hand, and of course they throw the ball out wide while Montpellier were only 14 on the park scoring 3 tries in the first half alone, and at half time had a commanding lead 25-6, but this perpetual stoppage for video sightings is spoiling the game, the ref have always made decisions right or wrong, now it seems they are crying scared to call it off their own backs, and absolutely everything is going upstairs to the Video Ref, how did we get here???
The second half was again more Clermont than the visitors, Sivivatu, played a great game at scrum half replacing the red carded Parra and got himself on the score card early in the second half, with an outrageous dummy pass, plus another from Nakaitaci which gave Clermont 5 tries in all. Montpellier showed a little class late on and got 2 good winger tries from Dupont and Ranger, but it was never going to be enough.
Final score Clermont 42 Montpellier 16
Clermont may not have won many finals in fact only one and lost 11 but they are a fantastic team with or without their Internationals and the pride just flows throughout the Stadium Marcel Michelin, whether it’s from the team or their supporters.
73 games without defeat at home pure magic, Gentlemen I raise my hat to you Bravo!!!
This coming Friday Feb. 28th, Montpellier is at home against Stade Francais, ko. 20.45 and once again Canal +’s Friday night gala game, this is a massive game for Montpellier and one they cannot afford to lose.
