Firstly congratulations to the players, the coaches, the staff, all the club officials and anyone who I may have forgotten, Saturday 7th May history was made in Montpellier by the Montpellier Herault Rugby, for the very first time in their lives they qualified for the play-offs but more importantly they are members of a very select squad, next seasons H Cup participants.
17 more points and 4 places higher than last season, incredible, a record breaking crowd, and the supporters unbelievable, the atmosphere, the noise, the ICI, ICI, C’EST MONTPELLIER the 16th man urged Montpellier throughout the match and willed them onto victory, and the team responded in 5 star standards.
Magnificent in attack, the defence was pure defiance, blood and guts all around, nobody wanted to leave that playing field the pride was immense and for all to see, not many games are imbedded in the memory of so many but this game against Toulon will live forever.
Montpellier 27 Toulon 3, no one would have dreamt of a finish like this, win the game certainly but 3 tries to ZERO, was not in the game plan, but it did happen and it was not a dream.
Montpellier started the game like men possessed, having a Benji Thiery try disallowed in the 1st min. but they scored minutes later, Martin Bustos-Moyano diving over in the corner and he added the extras without difficulty. Toulon could not get into the Montpellier 22, and if they did Montpellier hijacked the ball and Francois Trinh-Duc smashed the ball back into their half, but with power and precision, the defence followed in a line and upended whoever had the ball, knocking the opposition back with body shuddering tackles, the guys in Blue were hungry, having been shown only photos of Wilco and a few others, but given no food for days, you consume Toulon till they have nothing left to give they were told,  and that is exactly what they did.
Out played, out manoeuvred, there was only one team on the park, Montpellier!!! 2 more tries were added in the second half by Timmy Nagusa and Man of the Match Francois Trinh-Duc, but all 23 were Men of the Match, a team game won by a great team, in the end Toulon had nothing to give, it was one way traffic, even their President could not help as he had already left the Stadium before the final try, taking a last long look at the Galthie Scooter that he thought was his, how WRONG could a President be!!!
At the final whistle the immense joy erupted and continued for hours after, a Lap of Honour by the players well deserved, then the General (Galthie) did one of his own and of course where was the SCOOTER, fear not in control, Bullit Montpellier’s Video Analyst, who gave this vibrant shiny machine its own Lap of Honour taking Club Captain Fulgence Ouedraogo as master planner and navigator on pillion with him. The SCOOTER was then sedately parked just outside the Toulon dressing room door, just in case the players needed to have a last look at Mr Galthie’s prize possession, which was going nowhere.
